On average, approximately 30 surgeries are performed a day at ARC. Our approach to surgery is modeled after clinic flow standards established by the ASPCA. Additionally, ARC’s programs include low-cost surgeries for rescue partners, an Emergency Medical Fund (EMF) which subsidizes life-saving surgeries for shelter animals and a low-cost vaccine clinic. Reliability and punctuality are required as well as a willingness to assist the team where necessary.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Nursing Care and Client Services (40%):Possess in-depth knowledge and understanding of veterinary medical concepts.Maintain the efficiency and speed necessary to assist with spay/neuter surgeries at a pace which is compliant with clinic flow standards set by the ASPCA.Provide compassionate and quality patient care at all times.Proficient in various technical veterinary technician skills, including but not limited to, venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring.Possess critical thinking and multi-tasking skills.Able to prioritize and re-prioritize based on ARC clinic and patient needs.Proficient in animal handling and restraint for various medical procedures.Treat animals and their owners with care and respect, including ensuring that the animals in our care are as clean as practicable while awaiting or recovering from surgery.Competently explain to clients any information the Veterinarian has documented about an animal’s condition, including any reason for a declined surgery and or any reason for changing treatment or medication.Document and communicate patient concerns or observed changes to Veterinarians.Medicate patient following Veterinarian instructions.Lift patients up to 50 pounds.Be proficient in placing an IV catheter, induction of anesthesia, intubation and maintenance of the patient under gas anesthesia.Professionalism, Communication and Performance (40%):Represent ARC in a professional and courteous manner at all times.Provide management with regular feedback about training needs.Collaborate with ARC staff, working as a team player yet be able to work independently without supervision.Support and profess thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures.Maintain an open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement and teach new protocols.Ensure and maintain high quality standard of care, work ethic and performance.Work efficiently and calmly under challenging conditions.Attend staff meetings and training sessions.Advise Clinic Manager and/or Veterinarian of any unsafe conditions including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules.Housekeeping and Maintenance (20%):Clean and disinfect kennels, equipment and facility while utilizing appropriate PPE.Follow all departmental PPE and cleaning protocols.Follow all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA):Follow all written and verbally communicated Standard Operating Procedures.All technicians are responsible for communicating any anticipated shortages in supplies to the veterinarian or manager.Assist with unpacking and storing of supplies that are delivered to the Clinic lobby, ensuring that all items are initialed on receipt.Ensure that the entire Clinic, including the operating and prep area, lobby and kennels are maintained to the highest level of cleanliness throughout the day.Additional Expectations:Show up promptly (7:45 a.m.) for the day to be prepared for the timely intake of patients.Present a professional appearance at all times, wearing scrubs provided by ARC, keeping hair and nails groomed and cleanedAble to lift up to 50 pounds. Able to work standing for 10 or more hours. Basic to advanced computer skills, including Excel, Microsoft Office and ClinicHQ. High degree of integrity and accountability, knowledge of spay/neuter operations, knowledge of veterinary hospital protocols and procedures. Must possess excellent customer service skills, outstanding interpersonal communication and ability to work in a team environment or independently. Possess a sense of humor and can balance flexibility and enthusiasm and thrive on detail.
